This summer, that hush has a brief home in Seattle. From June 13 through July 6, 2026, the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) has partnered with Julien's Auctions for Icons of Soccer — a curated artifact spotlight that gathers more than twenty objects spanning over six decades of the global game. It arrives at a charged moment: Seattle is a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the streets thick with scarves and anthems, and the museum founded by Paul Allen — himself one of pop culture's great collectors — has become an unlikely cathedral for the sport's deepest relics.

Anchored by the King

At the center of it all stands Pelé. Not the highlight reel, not the statue, but the man rendered in things he touched. The exhibition draws from his personal collection, and the through-line is intimate rather than triumphal: his 1960 Brazil passport, the document of a young man already becoming a continent's emissary; the 1958 Honorary Bauru Trophy, a tribute from his hometown before the legend fully hardened; and the object that gives the room its gravity — his 1962 Brazil FIFA World Cup Gold Winner's Medal, awarded to a member of the squad that lifted the trophy in Chile when Pelé was, at twenty-one, already a two-time world champion.

To understand what that medal represents is to understand soccer's capacity to compress an entire mythology into a few ounces of gold. Held privately since Julien's landmark 2016 Pelé estate sale, it returns now to public view as both artifact and argument: that the world's game produces not merely champions, but icons whose objects become collective memory.

From there, Icons of Soccer widens into a survey of the sport's evolution. Messi's signed Argentina jersey speaks to the present. Material tied to Kylian Mbappé extends the line into soccer's next chapter. And the deeper cuts reward the devout — match-worn jerseys from goalkeeping titans Oliver Kahn and Manuel Neuer, a 1955 Adrián Escudero tribute medal connected to Alfredo Di Stéfano, whose five consecutive European Cups with Real Madrid remain among the sport's most staggering feats, and a 1970 Brazil World Cup gold medal from the Baldocchi collection, tethered to perhaps the greatest national side ever assembled. Taken together, the installation traces a single unbroken arc — from Di Stéfano and Pelé, through the mythology of Maradona, into the Messi-and-Mbappé present.

From the Pitch to the Block

The exhibition is the overture. The full performance arrives on Thursday, July 9, 2026, when Julien's Auctions presents Sports Legends: The Pitch To The Court — a landmark sale of nearly 350 pieces tracing the evolution of athletic greatness across soccer, basketball, tennis, football, and baseball. With more than 300 individual soccer items, it constitutes something close to a museum-grade history of the global game, and ranks among the house's most significant sports offerings since that 2016 Pelé estate auction, which realized $4–5 million.

It is also, by design, a multi-sport reckoning — a reflection of how today's collectors hunt iconic objects across disciplines rather than within a single fandom. And the estimates tell the story of where that appetite now lives.

The financial tentpole of the sale is not, in fact, a soccer object at all. It is the LeBron James game-worn and signed rookie-year Cleveland Cavaliers jersey (estimate $300,000–$500,000), the undisputed basketball centerpiece — a garment dating to the literal genesis of one of the most dominant careers in NBA history.

Close behind, and carrying the soul of the soccer offering, is Pelé's 1962 World Cup Gold Winner's Medal (estimate $200,000–$400,000), the same relic anchoring the MOPOP installation, now offered to the open market for the first time in nearly a decade — a moment of real consequence for collectors and alternative-asset investors alike.

The rest of the headline lots read like a roll call of beginnings. A Diego Maradona match-worn 1978 rookie-year jersey from his Argentinos Juniors debut (estimate $10,000–$20,000) captures the compact, electric seventeen-year-old before the Hand of God, before Naples, before the mythology — a rare artifact from the moment the legend had not yet formed. A pair of Kobe Bryant 1998 game-worn and signed Adidas shoes (estimate $10,000–$20,000) marks the early scaffolding of the Black Mamba's global legacy. And for the baseball purists, a Roger Maris bat photo-matched to his 1962 season (estimate $4,000–$6,000) carries the weight of his record-defying 61-home-run campaign.

Around these anchors orbits a constellation of supporting lots that deepen the soccer canon: Cristiano Ronaldo's match-worn 2008 Manchester United boots from his Champions League–winning season, David Beckham's match-worn 2009 England jersey, Erling Haaland's signed 2020 Borussia Dortmund jersey, a signed Ronaldo Nazário rookie trading card, and a Gerd Müller match-worn jersey from 1972–73, the peak of a striker whose 68 goals in 62 West Germany appearances stood as a record for four decades.
