Boy George | 1986 Spring Patrick Cox for John Galliano Hobo Boots

A pair of Patrick Cox for John Galliano 'Hobo' boots, 'Fallen Angels' for the Spring Summer 1986 collection from the Collection of Boy George.

The burgundy pig-skin leather shoes have a contrasting beige strip cotton fabric along the vamp and open heel. They feature a brown leather lace up front and a distinctive long square toe. The sole is a stacked brown leather construction with visible stitching, and the interior is lined with leather. Measurement heel to toe is 11.25 inches.

John Galliano’s Spring Summer 1986 collection, “Fallen Angels,” is one of his earliest and most iconic statements, blending romantic historical references with a sense of raw theatricality. Inspired by post-revolutionary France and the draped forms of classical antiquity, the collection featured soft, fluid silhouettes that felt both delicate and subversive. In an interview for Another Magazine John Galliano described the collection, "I was hungry for the kind of aspirational beauty that inspires hope… a hankering for beauty, for heroism, for hedonism and hope.” In the finale, the garments were soaked so they became see-through, pushing boundaries and referencing the myth of “muslin disease” while challenging traditional ideas of beauty and modesty. Accessories, including limited-run shoes by Patrick Cox, added to the collection’s cult status.

As Cox recalled after discovering his designs had been dragged through the mud during the show, Galliano simply responded, “It’s designer mud darling—they’re worth more now!” Capturing the spirit of the collection. Boy George has been a collector and admirer of John Galliano’s early work in the 1980’s. Specifically collections that featured New Romantic designs. During an interview with Julien’s Auction he said, “if I watch a fashion show, in the like, my favorite fashion is John Galliano because they’re so theatrical because that’s what it is.”
