This is a Jean Paul Gaultier green velvet over-coat from the collection of Boy George. The musician was photographed wearing the velvet mid-length coat on several occasions: for the music video “Whisper,” on Donahue for the 1988 televised interview, and also in photograph taken at a London hotel in October of 1988. Boy George wore this jacket while promoting and performing “Don't Cry” from his second solo album Tense Nervous Headache, released in the U.S. under the title High Hat. George also wore this during a 1988 interview with Phil Donahue at The Palladium in London as part of the Donahue in London series, where he answered questions from the audience.

The design features a single-breasted closure with a curved notch lapel, tailored for a straight silhouette that hangs away from the body. The interior is fully lined with an olive-colored viscose fabric. A Jean Paul Gaultier Homme label is sewn on the interior neckline.

Boy George first met Jean Paul Gaultier in 1984 following the designer’s first men’s fashion show. Boy George even served as an inspiration in the designer’s spring 2013 runway with Karli Kloss modeling one of four looks inspired by the musician and his era as the lead singer of the Culture Club. The style of both Boy George and Jean Paul Gaultier is radical, provocative, and gender blurring. The key to their satirical style is promoting the bohemian mantra, beauty, truth, freedom, and love.

In 2014 Jean Paul Gaultier and Boy George interviewed each other. The musician during the interview said, “We pulled off what I’d call the great fashion lie. We’ just put it over here, pulled it over there. You create it from a kind of myth.” Both are originals and the fascination that has been born from Boy George’s fashion is the beauty in rebelling to create a new narrative.
