Boy George | 1999 Philip Treacy Purple Hat (With Images)

A custom Philip Treacy purple top hat from the collection of Boy George. He wore the hat at the 1999 American Music Awards press room at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on January 11, 1999.

Boy George also wore this hat while hosting Boy George: One on One, the celebrity chat show filmed in his home, where he conducted an interview with Sophie Ellis Bextor.

The felt hat has a flat crown with an upward curve brim. The surface is covered with a black net with silver rhinestones. There is also a silver-tone rhinestone ribbon wrapped around the trim. The interior is lined with a synthetic purple satin with a Philip Treacy label at the interior.

Philip Treacy is an Irish, award-winning haute couture milliner. Known for his sculptural, avant-garde hats, he’s been called by Vogue “perhaps the greatest living milliner.” For over 30 years, he’s been creating exquisite, handcrafted pieces that wow and surprise, turning the ordinary into something truly extraordinary. On February 8, 2026, Philip Treacy posted on Instagram, “I became a hat designer because of Boy George! Growing up in Ireland he inspired me. He is my Bowie.”
