John Wayne | Original 1929 Screen Test Audition – Newly Discovered 35mm Film Reels lot
John Wayne | Original 1929 Screen Test Audition – Newly Discovered 35mm Film Reels
A group of three original 35mm nitrate film reels from 1929, two of which feature a rare screen test for John Wayne (aka Duke Morrison) and Ward Bond, and a third featuring a screen test with Charles Morton and Ward Bond. The audition footage is believed to have been shot by Russell Birdwell for a film titled Rough Romance (Fox, 1930), in which Wayne played an uncredited role alongside Bond. Before this discovery, Wayne's first Hollywood test footage (considered lost) was presumed to have been shot for The Big Trail (Fox, 1930). This is the first time new footage from such an early stage in Wayne's career has come to light, especially notable considering it was likely shot several months prior to the footage taken for The Big Trail, his first starring role.  The condition of the film is remarkably well-preserved, with no notable signs of deterioration, damage, or wear, and the images are exceptionally sharp and clear, a phenomenon well-known to collectors of nitrate film. In the footage, a handsome 22-year-old Wayne can be seen wearing a cowboy hat, a neckerchief, and a western bib-front shirt, already embodying the classic cowboy persona that would later make him famous.     Note to Bidders:This item is an original nitrate film element. Due to the inherently flammable and regulated nature of nitrate stock, shipping must comply with all applicable hazardous materials laws and carrier restrictions. As a result, special handling, packaging, and approved transport services will be required. Shipping costs may be higher than standard rates, and delivery timelines may be extended. By bidding, you acknowledge and accept these conditions.

Overall: 11 x 11 x 1.75 in; 27.94 x 27.94 x 4.45 cm
