Warner Bros., 1956. A typed contract signed in blue ballpoint pen by James Dean, on Warner Bros. stationery, committing him to the starring role in his final film, George Stevens's epic. He died in a car accident days after filming wrapped. The contract, dated April 2, 1955, extends the terms of Warner Bros. October 7, 1954 contract with Dean for “the motion picture in which you are now rendering services tentatively entitled REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE…The motion picture in connection with the production of which you shall render your services under said contract…shall be the motion picture tentatively entitled ‘GIANT', with you portraying the role of ‘Jett Rink.’" Dean received $1500 per week with a "minimum guaranteed employment" of 10 weeks. The contract is also signed by Warner Bros. assistant secretary R.J. Obringer. A typed note on yellow paper clipped to the contract reads “For your files.” Also present is a memo from Obringer to Mr. Harry Sokolov at Famous Artists Corp., summarizing the contract and saying “If you find the same in order kindly have Dean sign all copies and return to me for further handling.”
