Annotated Speech to Trinity College

Al Pacino | Annotated Speech to Trinity College lot
Al Pacino | Annotated Speech to Trinity College
A typed copy of a speech given by Al Pacino at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, in 2006. The speech is annotated with Pacino's handwritten notes throughout.Pacino was in Ireland with his friend, journalist Larry Grobel, who wrote the initial draft of the speech. Grobel writes of the piece,"In 2006, I went with Al Pacino to Dublin, London, and Paris to film segments about Oscar Wilde’s life for the film Pacino was making about Wilde’s play, Salome. Pacino was fascinated and energized by Wilde’s writing and the day before he began shooting his film, he asked me to be in it. I didn’t know who I was supposed to play, but he said I should be his biographer and just hang out with him as we walked around Trinity College, visited the theaters in London where Wilde’s plays were shown, the house on Tite Street where he lived, and the Hotel Cadogan where he was arrested for “gross indecency…”, and  L’Hotel in Paris (formerly Hotel D’Alsace) where he died soon after being released from the prison in England that held him for two years. "The Philosophical Society in Dublin invited Pacino to a dinner in his honor and asked him to speak to them at a theater at Trinity College. ‘Write me something,’ Pacino said the night before the event. ‘About what?’ I asked.  ‘I don’t know—some kind of thank you for the invitation and something to do with Oscar Wilde.’“So, I wrote something, gave it to Al, he added his comments, I made a clean copy, and on November 22, 2006, we all wore black ties and were treated like royalty at the dinner and event. After the short speech, Pacino took questions, and they were good ones (one student asked if he would say, 'Fuck you!' to him, that got both laughs and applause). I wrote about this event in the book I wrote about the making of Wilde Salome, called I Want You In My Movie!"
