There is a distinct difference between a souvenir and a piece of history. In the world of pop culture collecting, that line is usually drawn by the provenance — the life the object lived before it hit the auction block. When the curator of that life is an EGOT winner, a cultural trailblazer, and one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, the result isn’t just a catalog; it’s a biography in objects.

At Julien’s, we have handled the estates of rock gods and screen legends, but Whoopi Goldberg: The Collection offers something rarer: a dedicated, curated glimpse into the private world of a living icon. For the first time, over 500 lots from Whoopi’s personal archives are coming to market, stripping away the celebrity veneer to reveal a woman of deep sentiment, eclectic taste, and a serious eye for detail.

The motivation behind the sale is refreshingly relatable. Despite a career spanning over 40 years, Whoopi’s reason for opening the vault to the world is one most of us understand: space.

“Over seven decades of a life well lived and more than 40 years of a fabulous career, it’s time to part with some of the many treasures that are filling more storage units than one person should have,” Goldberg admits. It’s a candid admission that grounds the auction. These aren’t just props; they are the very mementos she kept in her home and stored securely through time.

The Eclectic Curator

What makes this collection a standout event for collectors is the sheer range. Whoopi is not easily categorized, and neither is her collection.

On one end of the spectrum, you have high-grade Americana and fine art. We are talking about Tiffany Studios lighthouse candlesticks (Est. $15k–$25k) and an original Keith Haring black marker drawing on a brown paper envelope (Est. $6k–$8k) — pieces that speak to a sophisticated appreciation of craft and art history.

On the other end, you have the whimsical nature that makes Whoopi, Whoopi. There are custom-designed The Color Purple-inspired Crocs, a crew-embellished footstool from The View, and perhaps the ultimate road-trip memorabilia: her 1998 Prevost LeMirage Tour Bus (Est. $150k–$250k).

Wearable History

For film buffs and fashion historians, the textile lots are the headline act, and the collection functions as a timeline of modern entertainment history. From the screen to the stage and the red carpet, featured pieces include a blazer worn in Sister Act 2 and the uniform from Corrina, Corrina — instantly recognizable touchstones of 90s cinema.

Also included is a headdress worn during her stint in The Lion King on Broadway which bridges her work between the screen and stage characters she has lend her voice and likeness to for many years.

From a red carpet standpoint, the collection offers the custom Christian Siriano gown Goldberg wore to the 2008 Tony Awards and the Bob Mackie-designed two-tone polka-dot costume she donned during her hosting gig at the 1999 Academy Awards — garments that have seen the brightest lights in the industry.
