Richard Avedon photographed Whitney Houston in 1987. She kept the portrait in her office. Not as decoration. As a statement about who she was and what she knew herself to be.

That detail alone says something about how she moved through her own legend: not with ironic distance, but with full ownership. She was, by every measure, one of the most celebrated artists in recorded music history, and she seemed to know it in the way that actually matters, not as vanity but as responsibility.

That iconic portrait is now among the items heading to auction on August 11, when Julien's Auctions presents "The Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation 2026 Auction.” Now open for bidding online through August 11, the auction is the second collaboration between Julien's and the Foundation in as many years, and its proceeds entirely benefit the organization's work supporting youth through scholarships, arts education, and community programs.

The timing carries weight. August 8, what would have been Houston's 63rd birthday, opens the week with the Foundation's 5th Annual Legacy of Love Gala at The Whitley Hotel in Atlanta, where Babyface will perform and a preview of auction highlights will be on view. The gala's theme this year is "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," a nod to the single that, in the summer of 1987, topped the Billboard Hot 100 on June 27 as her fourth consecutive chart-topper, while the album Whitney simultaneously debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The song went on to win Houston the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards. The RIAA eventually certified it 9x Platinum in the United States, and that sales award is included in the auction.

Much like Whitney Houston’s vocal prowess, the collection is a study in range. There are the fashion pieces that trace Houston's relationships with the houses she favored throughout her career: a Versace red leather set worn during the 1999 VH1 Divas concert, a Dolce & Gabbana gown from the fitting room of the My Love Is Your Love World Tour, Dolce & Gabbana boots worn to the 1999 Met Gala, and a Burberry coat from her final tour, Nothing But Love. There is a Bob Mackie embellished jacket. There is a three-piece MCM luggage set. A Carolina Herrera striped set worn during her "Classic Whitney" performances in 1997. A stage stool and personal tea set used during the My Love Is Your Love World Tour.

Then there is the black mesh mini dress. The press materials note that Houston wore it during the final performances of the Nothing But Love World Tour and also the night she attended Prince's "21 Nite Stand" residency at The Forum in Inglewood, California, where she joined him onstage for an impromptu dance and performance. The dress doesn't come with a certificate of historical significance. It doesn't need one. Some objects accumulate meaning simply by being present in the right rooms.

The 1988 American Music Awards stage-worn mini dress rounds out the apparel portion of the sale, and a gold-plated Social Security card engraved with her name adds an odd, intimate note to the collection. It's not the kind of item that fits neatly into the category of memorabilia. It's personal in a way that most things in an auction house aren't.

"Whitney's voice and legacy continue to inspire generations," said Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien's Auctions. Pat Houston, president of the Foundation and executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston, echoed the sentiment: "We have some super great one-of-a-kind memorabilia from Whitney's archives and we are excited about the auction."

The Foundation was established in 2020 by the Estate and continues work Houston pursued throughout her life. In 1997, her elementary school in East Orange, New Jersey was renamed the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Performing and Creative Arts, making her the only artist to have an institution of that kind bear her name during her lifetime.
