Lot #101
Four-piece burlesque ensemble designed by Bob Mackie for the 1981 Las Vegas stage production Jubilee! and worn by Britney Spears for her 2001 HBO Dream within a Dream Tour televised concert special. Spears performed in the bra and armbands for "Baby One More Time..." for the filmed HBO performance; she wore the full burlesque ensemble for promotional images advertising the Las Vegas concert.
The burlesque costume designed by Bob was inspired by The Ziegfeld Follies and was handmade in France. The bra, undergarments, and armbands are all French wirework and backed with a blush fabric for a nude illusion. The bra and underwear have set stones and drops at the underbust of the bra and the waistline of the underwear.
Spears recalls this tour in her memoir 'The Woman in Me'; she writes, "'The Dream Within a Dream Tour,' right after my album 'Britney' came out in the fall of 2001, was my fourth tour and one of my favorites [...] When someone knew just how to style me, I was always grateful. They are shrewd about how they presented me as a star, and I know that I owe them. They captured me as an artist. The minds behind that tour were brilliant. It was by far my best tour."
Bob Mackie's career spans six decades, with his work gaining popular and critical acclaim since the 1960s, including three Academy Award nominations for costume design, nine Emmys wins (a total of 33 nominations and awards), a Tony Award for The Cher Show, and the prestigious CDFA Geoffrey Beene award.
This lot comes with a magazine with Britney Spears wearing the entire ensemble.
Jubilee! ran from 1981 to 2014, produced by Donn Arden; the show featured over 1,000 costumes based on Florenz Ziegfeld stage shows with elaborate couture costumes worn by the showgirls.
