1960 Jean Louis "Misfits" Press Conference Worn Dress with Book

An original Jean Louis painted-silk jersey cocktail dress worn by Marilyn Monroe for The Misfits (United Artists, 1961) cast press conference in the summer of 1960. Jean Louis' design consists of a cream/beige silk jersey with a painted abstract pattern in watercolors and light brush strokes that mirror the lightness of the fabric. The dress has a fitted bodice with hand-gathered pleats that are hand-sewn into place. The bodice and skirt are sewn just below the waistline, while the skirt is also hand-pleated and accompanied by a sash/tie on both sides of the dress to cinch it and offer more definition. The abstract print contains magenta and shades of green and brown. The print has circular rings that appear to ripple. The bodice and skirt are lined with a chiffon crepe, and the bodice has a lining hand-sewn inside and fitted in contrast to the outer layer of the skirt. A concealed zipper has hook-and-eyes that hide the closure. The hem of the skirt lands below the knee and is hand-tacked, beautifully constructed, and designed specifically for Marilyn, who was a fan of wearing silk jersey fabrics. There is no size label present, but there is a designer label that reads "Jean Louis," along with pen notations in black ink reading. "MM #2." The skirt has moderate discoloration with minor staining. Jean Louis Berthault was an Academy Award-winning costume designer whose effortless designs helped make stars more glamorous. He was the first costume designer to receive a "Gowns By" screen credit. Jean Louis' nude illusion dress for Marilyn that she wore on May 19, 1962, became one of the most famous gowns in pop culture, selling in 2016 for $4.8 million dollars, the most expensive piece of pop culture memorabilia of all time.

1954 Jeans from "River of No Return" from the Personal Collection of Dee and Tommy Hilfiger

20th Century Fox, 1954. A pair of classic denim blue jeans; three front pockets, zip fly, button marked "Foremost J.C.P. Co. [J.C. Penney Company], two back pockets with a double line of horizontal yellow stitching, evident tailoring at waist and hips; inside label reads " 1-68-1-0435 Helen /Thurston A-713" [Monroe's stunt double]; small rip on back left side under the pocket, purposeful distressing on the front legs; worn by both Monroe and her double as "Kay Weston." Evidently, Marilyn and Thurston must have interchanged jeans during production because this pair ended up being in Marilyn's possessions when she died in 1962. The waistband and the hips have been taken in on this pair, likely for Marilyn's exact measurements, which is possibly why she took them home with her after filming wrapped. Decades later, in October 1999, world-renowned clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger won these jeans at the Christie's New York auction of Monroe's personal property. He had them framed in a shadowbox which hung in his office for over 20 years, until now when he decided to offer them in this auction. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this item will benefit NEXT for AUTISM.

PROVENANCE: Originally sold in the Christie's New York auction titled "The Personal Property of Marilyn Monroe," Sale #9216, October 27-28, 1999, as part of Lot 7 which included three pairs of jeans, this pair being one of them.

An archive of over 60 film and stage photographs of Harry Belafonte, many vintage, original publicity photos, and one contact sheet; together with an exhibit catalogue for "On Stage: Alfred J. Balcombe's Photojournal, 1947-1952" which reproduces an image included in this collection: "Tony Curtis and Harry Belafonte, Dramatic Workshop of the New School for Social Research, New York, 1947." Belafonte and Curtis met in Erwin Piscatore's legendary theater workshop at The New School for Social Research before the men became famous (at the time, Curtis went by his given name, Bernie Schwartz).

Images range from approximately the 1940s to the 1990s and include pictures of Belafonte with Billy Eckstine and the Miles Davis Band, Dorothy Dandridge, Lavar Burton and Caitlyn Jenner (credited as Bruce Jenner), Joan Fontaine, and Ed Sullivan. Several stills feature Belafonte performing at The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on October 2, 1956. The collection also features stills from Belafonte's films Bright Road (MGM, 1953), Carmen Jones (20th Century Fox, 1954), Island and the Sun (20th Century Fox, 1957), The Angel Levine (United Artists, 1970), Buck and the Preacher (Columbia Pictures, 1972), and Grambling's White Tiger (NBC, 1981).
