The Life & Laughs of Joan Rivers Come To Light At Auction
Explore Joan Rivers' life and times through her most cherished possessions up for bid in 'The Joan Rivers Auction,' featuring over 300 personal and career items, showcasing the iconic comedian's legacy.
The wit of Joan Rivers was as sharp and timeless as the style she curated throughout her legendary career. It's fitting, then, that an upcoming auction of her most cherished possessions isn't merely a sale but an intimate look into the life and times of a cultural icon. The Joan Rivers Auction, presented by Julien’s Auctions in collaboration with her daughter, Melissa Rivers, is a thoughtfully curated collection that showcases the evolution of a comedic pioneer through her own artifacts. This isn't just about what she owned; it's about what defined her.
Slated for Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10 AM PT live at The Peninsula Beverly Hills and online, the auction promises an experience that is a true testament to Rivers’ enduring legacy. The items up for bid aren’t just glamorous props from her life but serve as tangible milestones of her remarkable journey. They offer a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the woman who famously broke down barriers with her fearless commentary and unapologetic authenticity.
Each piece tells a part of her story. From a Stage-Worn Beaded Performing Coat—a sparkling testament to the glamorous persona she commanded on stage—to a framed Hollywood Walk of Fame Display, which marks a pivotal moment of public recognition for her groundbreaking career. The collection also includes a signed 1988 Hirschfeld “Broadway Bound” Portrait, connecting us to her acclaimed performance and her roots in live theater. These items act as chapters in the larger story of Joan Rivers' life, a timeline told through the art she collected, the jewelry she adorned herself with, and the accessories that completed her signature look.

What makes this auction particularly special is the collaboration with Melissa Rivers, who had the honor of working with Julien’s to bring the world a collection that truly captures her mother's essence. Melissa noted that her mother “put a lot of time and effort and thought into what she was wearing,” and was always "very over-the-top glam". Even her mother’s doodles and sketches reveal her progression as an artist and a person.
The collection reminds us that Rivers’ impact extended far beyond the stage. Her influence on fashion and pop culture was profound, and this sale is a chance to acquire a piece of that history. This is more than a transaction; it’s an opportunity to connect with the authentic, unapologetic spirit of Joan Rivers—a woman whose life was a masterclass in resilience, humor, and style.
The Joan Rivers Auction is an homage to a trailblazer. It invites us to walk through her life story, not just as fans, but as witnesses to the legacy of an icon who opened doors for generations to come.
The Joan Rivers Auction is the first sale to feature a comprehensive collection of items from Rivers' personal life and career, from her groundbreaking stand-up to her billion-dollar empire with QVC. The auction includes over 300 lots coming to the market for the first time, including stage and screen-worn costumes, awards, iconic designer fashion pieces, jewelry, home décor, and art created and collected by Rivers.

The curated collection of Rivers’ most treasured pieces includes a Stage-Worn Beaded Performing Coat with Feathers which she wore during her stand-up act in the 2010s. The custom-made coat is covered in pink champagne-colored sequins and trimmed with matching feathers. For her stand-up routine, Rivers would typically wear a dramatic sparkling coat or jacket over a simple black pants ensemble. Melissa Rivers noted that her mother “put a lot of time and effort and thought into what she was wearing,” and was always "over-the-top glam". This coat exemplifies her stage style.
Also featured is a Hollywood Walk of Fame Display plaque. Presented to Joan Rivers on July 26, 1989, her star represents not just an honor for a triumphant career but also "the turning of an exciting new page" for Rivers. She received the honor just before the premiere of her daytime show,
The Joan Rivers Show, which cemented her career as a talk show host and for which she would win a Daytime Emmy Award.

The auction also includes a 1988 Hirschfeld “Broadway Bound” Portrait, an ink-on-paper portrait by Al Hirschfeld of Joan Rivers in her critically acclaimed performance in Neil Simon's Broadway Bound. Rivers, who had always dreamed of being on Broadway, knew she understood the role deeply and impressed everyone with her committed, powerful performance. The play was a seminal achievement that helped her pull herself out of a deep depression. Rivers said that earning the role was "the fulfillment of a lifelong dream as well as the best possible therapy".
"This historic auction offers an intimate look at her extraordinary life and legacy, from the sharp jokes she penned to the glamorous gowns she wore. We are honored to present this first comprehensive collection celebrating Joan’s brilliance, resilience, and influence, which continues to inspire generations today,” said Martin Nolan, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions.
The Joan Rivers Auction offers guests an experience befitting Rivers’ love of elegance and showmanship.
