Lot #751. Kirk Hammett | 2024 Universal Germany "72 Seasons" Platinum Sales Award - Sold Price: $7,680

A two-day "Played, Worn & Torn," auction event concluded recently at the esteemed Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum at The Municipal Auditorium, cementing its place as a spectacular confluence of rock and roll legacy, philanthropy, and passionate collecting.

Featuring over 850 remarkable pieces that traced the flashpoint moments, studio magic, and stage-shaking glory of music's greatest legends, the event proved to be a resounding success, fueled by enthusiastic bidders and generous consignors worldwide.

Set by the commitment of headlining consignors, including curated selections from the private collections of Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Adam Clayton (U2), and Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe) -- along with many other legendary artists, the auction commanded more than $2.5 million further proving the collectibility of celebrity-owned memorabilia and artifacts has never been higher.

Thanks to these artists and others represented in the auction, a portion of proceeds from their collections benefited crucial organizations such as MusiCares®, All Within My Hands, St. Jude's Children's Hospitals, and Teen Cancer America, alongside other instruments supporting Gibson Gives and various worthwhile causes. The collective spirit of giving was truly a hallmark of the auction.

Rock Legacies Lead the Charge

The auction room was electric, especially when the marquee instruments crossed the block. The top lot of the sale was undeniably Keith Richards' Played, Photo Matched, and Signed 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard, Sunburst. This piece of Stones history realized a strong price of $192,000, landing squarely within its $100,000 - $200,000 USD estimate and demonstrating the enduring market strength of such iconic artifacts.

However, the clear narrative of the week was the extraordinary enthusiasm for stage-played instruments, particularly those consigned by Kirk Hammett. The demand for the Metallica guitarist's gear shattered expectations repeatedly. His Stage Played 1985 Gibson Custom Shop Michael Schenker Flying V Electric Guitar incited a bidding frenzy that ultimately drove the final price to a staggering $160,000. Similarly, the Stage Played 1996 ESP/George Fedden Wavecaster Guitar, initially estimated at $8,000 - $12,000 USD, soared to $89,600, while his Stage-Played Signed Gibson CEO Build #4 SG Custom demolished its $4,000 - $6,000 USD estimate, achieving a robust $76,800. These results speak volumes about the global reach and dedicated fanbase of the Metallica legend.

Iconic Instruments and Rare Collectibles

The consistency of quality and provenance kept the action high throughout both days. Adam Clayton's collection of U2 stage-played basses performed exceptionally, often exceeding their high estimates. His U2 Stage Played 2016 Warwick Streamer Bass Guitar sold for $64,000, while a series of five other stage-played basses—including the 2014 Warwick Streamer CV, the 2016 Fender Precision Bass, and the Sherwood Green Jazz Bass—each found a new owner for $51,200, confirming the collectors’ desire for instruments tied to one of rock’s most enduring live acts.

Beyond the guitars, collectors vied for diverse touchstones of music history. The rarity market delivered strong results for the Sealed Alan Livingston "Yesterday and Today" Butcher Record Album (First State, Mono) by The Beatles, which achieved a commendable $89,600. Furthermore, an unexpected highlight was the John Coltrane Studio Played Ira Gitler Owned 1925 True Tone Alto Saxophone, which far exceeded its estimate, ultimately selling for $41,600. The commitment to charitable causes was also underscored by the sale of Slash's Gibson Gives Ukraine Relief Stage Played and Signed 2022 Gibson Slash Les Paul, which sold for $38,400, providing significant funding for a vital cause.

"Played, Worn & Torn" curated an exhibition of rock and roll's soul, made possible by the collaborative effort of our consignors, our venue partners, and the passionate participation of our global community of bidders. We are proud to have facilitated the transfer of these storied pieces to a new generation of custodians.
