Olivia Newton-John's Iconic 'Grease' Leather Jacket Makes Surprise Appearance at Grand Ole Opry

In a night filled with music and memories, the Grand Ole Opry was graced with the presence of a true icon – Olivia Newton-John's legendary "Grease" leather jacket. The surprise appearance of this iconic garment was part of a tribute to the late singer and actress, who passed away in August 2022.

GRAMMY® nominated artist Maggie Rose had the honor of wearing the jacket on stage during the Opry Country Christmas Show. Rose, who recently received her first GRAMMY® nomination, spoke about the significance of wearing the jacket and how Newton-John had inspired her career.

"I want to thank Olivia's family for letting me wear this piece of movie history on the Opry stage tonight," said Rose. "Five decades ago, Olivia was nominated for her first Grammy. From this very stage Olivia won her very first CMA Award! A few weeks ago, I was nominated for MY first Grammy. I'm hoping some of Olivia's Grand Ole Opry good luck rubs off on me.”

The appearance of the jacket was a fitting tribute to Newton-John, who had a long and successful career in both country music and pop. She was also a beloved actress, best known for her role as Sandy in the 1978 film "Grease."

The jacket is just one of many items from Newton-John's estate that will be auctioned off by Julien's Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on Friday, December 13th at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in our 'Julien's & TCM Presents Hollywood Legends: Property From The Estate Of Olivia Newton-John' live and online auction.

The auction will also feature other iconic items from Newton-John's career, including her "Grease" costume and her American Music Awards.

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit The Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, which supports plant-based cancer research and wellness programs.

The surprise appearance of the "Grease" leather jacket at the Grand Ole Opry was a moving tribute to a true icon. It was also a reminder of the lasting impact that Newton-John had on the world of music and entertainment.

A Homecoming for Olivia Newton-John

The exhibition of Olivia Newton-John's memorabilia at the Grand Ole Opry was a special homecoming for the singer. Newton-John was named Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1974 Country Music Association Awards, which were held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

The exhibition, which opened on November 22nd and closed on December 6th, received a record number of visitors. It was a fitting tribute to a singer who had a deep connection to the Grand Ole Opry and to country music.

A classic design; made of black leather, three front pockets, zip closures on front and sleeves, silver-tone metal hardware including "stars" affixed to the shoulder epaulets, self-belt, red satin lining with a Western Costume Company stamp evident, no other labels present; worn by the star as "Sandy" in the final scene of the film where she and John Travolta as "Danny" perform the songs "You're the One That I Want" and "We Go Together."

PROVENANCE: This jacket originally sold in the Julien's Auctions Beverly Hills sale titled "Property from the Life and Career of Olivia Newton-John," Sale #3236, November 2, 2019, Lot 443. Ms. Newton-John had saved this jacket for over 40 years, so it was a bittersweet moment for her when it sold at her charity auction for an astonishing $243,200 -- but what she didn't know at the time was that the buyer was going to give the jacket back to her. He and the team at Julien's met the star at her home in Santa Ynez, California where it was returned to her in a moving tribute. The jacket is now back at Julien's due to the sad passing of ONJ from breast cancer, which she bravely fought for many decades.
