'Music Icons' Concludes with Record-Breaking Success

The month ended on a high note with Julien's prestigious "MUSIC ICONS" auction, which wrapped its two-day run on Friday, May 30th, and Saturday, May 31st, live from the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City's Times Square. This highly anticipated event, which had a preview in London earlier in the month, saw nearly 700 pieces of music history rock the auction block, striking a powerful chord with collectors and fans alike.

Steven Tyler Stage Played "Dream On" Keyboard with Prop Grand Piano Frame

A Roland 88 key digital piano covered in a silver wrap with a prop grand piano frame made of aluminum and plexiglas that was played by Steven Tyler during Aerosmith concerts for the band’s classic song “Dream On.” Tyler can be seen playing the keyboard in footage from concerts held in 2019 here, in 2020 here, in 2022 here and here, and in 2025 below.

The piano frame is covered in a matching silver wrap and was rigged to emit smoke on stage for a dramatic effect through black pipes attached to the bottom, which allowed the cloud to billow out the bottom and from underneath the piano’s lid as if it were about to take flight. Lights were also installed to shine up through its plexiglas top, illuminating Joe Perry as he took a guitar solo, or Tyler himself as his voice ascends a full octave during the song’s stirring climax. This purpose-built grand piano appeared on stage at some point in 2019 and seems to have housed a few different full size keyboards. It was a fixture though 2025, notably during the band’s Deuces are Wild Las Vegas residency from 2019-2022, for the Peace Out farewell tour, and recently when Tyler performed “Dream On” with country singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson in February of 2025 at the Janies Fund Grammy Viewing Party, where the Evil Eye emblem, which was added between 2023 and 2025, can be seen in full view; the keyboard included in this lot was installed for this performance. Lot includes keyboard, power adapter, the grand piano frame, and casters for the frame.

Stage Played and Signed Charvel Art Series Guitar, Black with Red and White Stripes with Photos

A c.2007 Charvel EVH Art Series electric guitar, #196, in black finish with red and white stripes. Signed and stage played by Eddie Van Halen on October 5th, 2007 in Uncasville, CT. Eddie has inscribed the guitar “Uncasville, CT 10-5-’07 Van Halen ’07” and signed the guitar on the bass side of the body in gold felt tip pen.

This limited series of EVH Art Series guitars were born from a partnership between Eddie and Charvel, designed to his specs, and offered only through internet auctions. #196 bears its edition number on the neck plate as well as on a holographic sticker affixed to the tremolo spring cavity which reads “Genuine EVH 000196.”

The guitar features a 25.5” scale length one piece bolt-on maple neck with 22 frets, black dot inlays, a thin oil finish, chrome locking nut and string retainer, and six chrome Schaller sealed gear tuners on the headstock. The basswood body is finished in black with white and red stripes with no pickguard, a single black tone knob on the master volume control, and a chrome Original Floyd Rose vibrato with D-Tuner installed. The lone pickup in the bridge position is a Fender-made EVH Humbucker wired to a volume control and sent straight to the output jack. Includes original black hardshell case with EVH branded interior, a chrome arm for the Original Floyd Rose vibrato, an original COA from Charvel signed by Eddie Van Halen, a bag containing two case keys on green tassels, and three photos of Eddie Van Halen playing the guitar on stage.

Original Oil on Masonite Painting 1976 and Signed Birthday Card

An untitled original oil on masonite by Bob Dylan of a man wearing a hat, framed. The subject of the painting is Tommy Masters, who spent time with Dylan, Dennis Hopper and a group of friends during a trip to the beach town of Yelapa, near Puerto Vallarta in 1976.

Masters and his wife Gloria were part of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. They were members of the Jook Savages, a group of traveling artists and musicians, and later moved to Truchas in Northern Mexico. They were neighbors of photographer Lisa Law, who took one of her most famous images, of Masters sitting beside Janis Joplin, shortly before Joplin tragically died. Masters' association with Bob Dylan continued into the 1980s when he became a tour bus driver for the musician.

According to an account by Tommy Masters, "Back in 1976 Bob Dylan became disenchanted with one of his philanthropies, the Rubin Hurricane Carter tour. His celebrity had become burdensome and he sought anonymity. Dennis Hopper and I suggested we all go to Yelapa, near Puerto Vallarta, where there is no internal combustion mentality, that is no motor vehicles, the place is only accessible by boat.

Bob Dylan, Dennis Hopper, Kinky Freedman, Tommy Masters and Louis Kemp all flew down to PV. When we disembarked from the panga on the beach at Yelapa, an old friend of mine, Freddie Hoppman, rushed right past Dylan and embraced me. Freddie's greeting practically ignored Dylan and Bob remarked "This must be the place for me because nobody cares who you are here."

"While staying at Renaissance club owner Bennieand Miki Shapiro's home in Yelapa, Bob started painting and gave them all away. Once the word got out that the desheveled painter giving away painted coconuts and canvases was indeed Bob Dylan those folks returned to get Bob to sign them. We left shortly thereafter."

"All of us had a great time. We'd get up in the morning, wash up the river and swim in the falls, have breakfast, have lunch, get high. During the day we'd hang out on the beach. Bob would sit and play his guitar. He was playing the songs that are on the album "Desire". There was hardly anyone there, maybe eight or ten people. Bob would hang out with them, play chess with them. He just really got down, relaxed."

The painting is accompanied by a framed birthday card signed and inscribed in black ink "Happy Birthday Tommy / Best Wishes / Bob.". Circa late 1970s to early 1980s.

Joe Perry Stage Played and Signed Aerosmith 50th Anniversary Concert Gibson Les Paul Special DC Tribute

A Gibson Les Paul Special DC Tribute electric guitar, serial #111390071, in cherry red finish. Signed in silver felt tip pen and stage played by Joe Perry during Aerosmith’s 50th Anniversary concert held on Sept 8th, 2022 at Fenway Park in Boston, MA. This guitar and another just like it were part of Joe Perry’s Guitar Off My Back experience where fans could purchase one of Perry’s stage-used guitars packaged with a backstage meet and greet. The guitar comes with a signed COA from Joe Perry himself. The Gibson Les Paul Special DC Tribute features a 24.75” scale length maple neck with a 22 fret rosewood fretboard, dot inlays, and six vintage style tuners on the headstock. The body is made of mahogany and the guitar is finished in transparent cherry red. It wears a three ply black pickguard, a chrome wraparound lightning bar bridge, and a pair of P90 pickups wired to a three way toggle selector switch and master volume and tone controls. Includes COA and soft case.

Eric Clapton

Owned and Played 1988 Pensa-Suhr Electric Guitar Gifted by Mark Knopfler to Eric Clapton with Photo

1988 Pensa Suhr Custom HSS Stratocaster-style electric guitar in natural finish. This guitar was originally sold on June 24th, 1999 as part of the auction A Selection of Eric Clapton's Guitars benefiting the Crossroads Centre, a rehabilitation center for drug and alcohol addiction founded by Eric Clapton.

This was a gift to Eric Clapton from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, who played in Clapton's band from 1988-1989. Photographer Terry O'Neill captured an image of Clapton backstage with a number of guitars, including this guitar, for a promotional image that appeared in the 1989 Eric Clapton Tour program and can be seen here at Pensa Custom Guitars' Facebook page. This lot includes a photo of Knopfler playing his personal Pensa-Suhr guitar onstage with Eric Clapton at the Nelson Mandela Concert which took place at Wembley Stadium in London on June 11, 1998.

The Pensa-Suhr Stratocaster-style electric guitar features a 25.5" scale length maple neck with a 21 fret Brazilian rosewood fretboard with aged dot inlays, a 1.69" width black graphite nut, and six gold plated vintage style tuners with a partially worn Pensa-Suhr logo on the headstock. The two piece quilted maple body has exquisite figuring and is finished in a subtle natural sunburst with no pickguard, top-mounted controls, a gold plated hardtail bridge with black chrome saddles, and three EMG pickups (two single coil size pickup in the neck and middle positions and a humbucker in the bridge) wired to a five way blade selector switch, and a master volume and master tone with black dome control knobs.

The Pensa-Suhr includes a Certificate signed by Eric Clapton from the Christie's auction inscribed with the lot number, a black hardshell case with red interior, a grey nylon .73mm pick, a copy of the Christie's catalog for the 1999 Eric Clapton's Guitars auction, and a foam-backed print of Knopfler playing his personal Pensa-Suhr guitar onstage with Eric Clapton. Also includes a copy of the 1998 Eric Clapton The Guitarists of Genius book featuring a photo of Clapton posed with this guitar among a number of his other touring instruments.

1960s John Lennon Portrait By Stuart Sutcliffe with Photo

A framed watercolor and chalk on paper portrait of John Lennon painted by his friend and former band mate, Stuart Sutcliffe. There is a "J" written on John’s neck.

The painting was executed c. 1961/62 at Sutcliffe's studio in the attic of his girlfriend’s Astrid Kirchherr family home at Eimsbüttelerstr. 45a, Hamburg. In his book Beatles Guide Hamburg, Ulf Krüger writes about the Kirchherr’s family home: "Astrid lived on the third floor until the beginning of the 70s. During their Hamburg gigs The Beatles were often guests at Astrid and her mother’s. They were not only served their beloved English breakfast with ham and eggs or steak and mashed potatoes here, but discovered new books and records. From December 1961 until his death on April 10th 1962 Stuart Sutcliffe lived in a room in the attic. Before that, Klaus Voormann had stayed here. Stuart also set up a studio in the attic where he could paint undisturbed. There, most of his magnificent paintings were created, often in the early morning hours, after coming home from the Top Ten, when he was still too wired to sleep. Astrid photographed John Lennon and George Harrison in Stu’s studio."

At some point in the sixties the painting was given to Lennon and it was hung in the sunroom at Lennon’s Kenwood home in Weybridge, Surrey, England. The painting is accompanied by a vintage sixties black and white photograph taken in early June 1967 that shows Lennon resting on his sofa reading a copy of the International Times. The painting can be clearly seen in the photo hanging on the wall above John’s head.

The painting was gifted to Director of Photography for Cave Photographic Studios, Bernard Clark, by John Lennon, c. 1968. Clark's company provided photographic equipment to The Beatles, and Clark and his wife became friends with the group, especially Lennon and Ringo Starr, who both lived locally in St. Georges Hill, Weybridge at this time. They were regular visitors to John and Cynthia Lennon’s Kenwood home.

Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Clark's son, Stephen, that reads: "This is to confirm the authenticity of the portrait by Stuart Sutcliffe of John Lennon. The painting was owned by John and hung on the wall in his favorite room, the Sun Room, in his home in Weybridge, Kenwood. In the photo illustrated herein showing John Lennon in the Sun Room at Kenwood in St George's Hill, the Sutcliffe painting is the bottom picture at the far left on the wall behind the sofa and just above Lennon's head The painting was given to Bernard Clark who became a friend of John's and a visitor to Kenwood. Bernard was director of Photography of Cave Photographic Studios in Surrey, the company provided photographic equipment to The Beatles. It was during one of his visits to Kenwood that Bernard was given the portrait by John Lennon after he prevented John from tearing up the painting in a frustrated moment."

In the early 1970s Bernard Clark started his own business, The Boat House Gallery, Walton-On-Thames, Surrey, where this painting was framed. Printed label on reverse of frame reads, Bernard E. Clark, The Boat House Gallery, Walton On Thames, Surrey.

2013 Martin Eric Clapton Crossroads 000-45ECB Limited Edition Acoustic Guitar, Natural

A 2013 Martin Eric Clapton Crossroads 000-45ECB Limited Edition acoustic guitar, serial #1680004, in natural finish. One out of a very limited number of such instruments made with Brazilian rosewood back and sides, and with an interior label signed by Eric Clapton himself alongside C.F. Martin IV. It features a 24.9” scale length mahogany neck with a bound 20 fret ebony fretboard inlaid with abalone Crossroads emblems and 45 style position markers as well as Eric Clapton’s signature, also inlaid in abalone. The headstock has a bound rosewood overlay with Martin logo inlays of abalone and six gold plated Waverly tuners. The body has Brazilian rosewood back and sides and an Adirondack spruce top, multi-ply binding throughout with abalone purfling, an abalone rosette, an ebony bridge with Crossroads emblem inlays, and a plastic tortoise shell pickguard. The guitar includes original Martin Custom Shop case with Crossroads case shroud, and store hang tags.

Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohl Stage Played Concrete and Gold Tour Gretsch Drumkit

A one of a kind Gretsch drum kit custom made for the legendary late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins joined Foo Fighters in 1997, and at the time of his death he had been with the band for 25 years. He appeared on every Foo Fighters album from 1999’s There Is Nothing Left to Lose to Medicine at Midnight (2021). Prior to Foo Fighters, Hawkins was the touring drummer for singer and songwriter Alanis Morissette.

This kit was stage played by Hawkins during the Concrete and Gold Tour in 2018 including the Australian leg From January 20th to February 3rd as well as the European leg during all of June. It was also played by singer Dave Grohl, a former drummer for Nirvana, during songs in the set where Taylor took centerstage, singing songs like "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen as seen in the video linked below. The kit is easily identifiable in concert photos and footage thanks to its distinctive white and red design with black Japanese writing which translates to “Taylor Hawkins” as well as a drumhead featuring a black and white mashup of Taylor's face and The Bee Gees' Barry Gibb. The kit consists of seven drums: a kick, two floor toms, and four rack toms, as well as four black hardshell cases stenciled “Gruska” in white lettering and one soft case. No hardware included. The drums have sequential serial numbers ranging from 94602 to 94608.

Django Reinhardt

Fred Guy's c.1938 Levin De Luxe Archtop Guitar, Sunburst with Magazine

A c.1938 Levin De Luxe archtop guitar owned by Duke Ellington’s rhythm guitarist Fred Guy and played by the revered and widely influential guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1946. Reinhardt can be seen playing and tuning this Levin guitar in a pair of 1946 photographs taken backstage at Aquarium Restaurant in New York City by William P. Gottlieb (1917-2006), known for documenting the Jazz scene in New York City and Washington DC from 1938-1948. The guitar’s wood grain, play wear, and the particular pattern of the faux tortoise shell pickguard material are unmistakable in these photographs.

In the late 1800s, Herman Carlson Levin trained in guitar making in the United States, returning to open his own company in his home country of Sweden in 1900. Having garnered the favor of musicians as well as a number of awards throughout the ensuing years, the company produced over 100,000 instruments by the time the De Luxe was introduced to the lineup in 1937.

Fred Guy (1897-1971) was the rhythm guitarist for Duke Ellington’s Washingtonians from the 1920s until 1949. Like Reinhardt, he started on banjo and moved to the guitar, and acquired this Levin De Luxe from Waidele Musik in 1939 during the Orchestra’s visit to Göteborg, Sweden. He played it consistently from then until he retired from music and moved to Chicago in 1949. Guy passed away in 1971 and the guitar went to his wife, Dorothy Guy-Lynch, who passed it on to a friend of the family.

Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) was a highly respected jazz guitarist who formed the group Quintette du Hot Club de France, one of the pioneering forces of the lead guitar in jazz music. Reinhardt was invited to play with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in fall 1946, with 21 dates in about a month’s time. Django arrived in the states without a guitar and borrowed a Gibson ES-300 for the duration. Rather than being integrated into the band, Reinhardt played a special set during the show, backed only by Ellington. It was at one such performance at the Aquarium where photographer William P. Gottlieb captured the famous images of Reinhardt playing and tuning Guy’s Levin DeLuxe.

The guitar features a 24.75” scale length three piece flame maple neck with a bound 20 fret ebony fretboard, mother of pearl block inlays, a bone nut, Grover Sta-Tite tuning machines, and the elaborate and curvy Levin headstock replete with fanned mother of pearl inlays. The body is 17.3” in width at the lower bout, constructed from a spruce top with bound f-holes, flame maple sides, and a two piece flame maple back, all finished in a luxurious sunburst. The body is set off by wide multi-ply binding throughout with gold plated hardware which includes the tuners, De Luxe tailpiece, pickguard bracket, and screws. The pickguard is celluloid faux tortoise shell with a distinctive and identifiable pattern, also bound in multi-ply, with an ebony bridge and bridge base.

Currently only strung with five strings, the guitar includes its original Geib medallion hardshell case with black exterior and red interior, one celluloid tortoise shell pick, one one plastic shell thumb pick, one National branded metal finger pick, and a metal thumb pick. Also included are a set of old round wound strings individually bagged, two strings in bags which were changed in 2021, an empty bag which previously contained an inlay, and a portion of a heavily aged leather strap. Includes two issues of Guitar Aficionado magazine featuring Reinhardt with the Levin guitar as well as Vintage Guitare 2016 #24 and Acoustic Guitar February 1996 No. 38 also featuring the Levin.

Fender Custom Shop Frankenstein Stratocaster Limited Edition, Red with White and Black Stripes

A 2007 Fender Custom Shop Eddie Van Halen limited edition Frankenstein Replica Guitar in red finish with black and white stripes. A painstakingly accurate recreation of Eddie Van Halen’s legendary guitar made by Fender’s Master Builders, this instrument replicate every scratch, ding, and modification Eddie made to his original iconic instrument as part of a limited run of 300.

It features a 25.5” scale length maple neck with black dot inlays, 21 jumbo frets, a chrome plated locking nut, six chrome plated Schaller tuners, and a heavily aged oil finish on the neck. The ash body features the road worn striped paint job of the original along with chiseled-out pickup routs, a 1971 quarter mounted behind the bridge, a strip of masking tape on the treble side of the body where he used to store spare picks, a cut down black three ply pickguard with a single Tone knob on the guitar’s master volume control, large eye hooks for strap buttons, truck reflectors affixed to the back of the body, an original Floyd Rose locking tremolo, and a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop humbucker along with a dummy neck pickup and a switch stuffed in the middle pickup rout. The guitar includes original Van Halen branded Anvil flight case and the original COA signed by EVH himself, Frankenstein Replica brochure, and the tremolo arm for the guitar’s Floyd Rose vibrato.

The Beatles "Hey Jude" RIAA "Gold" Single Record Award

A white matte RIAA certified "gold" record award presented to The Beatles to commemorate the sale of over 1 million copies of their 1968 single, "Hey Jude."

Paul McCartney had the idea for the song "Hey Jude" one day in 1968 while on his way to visit John Lennon's first wife Cynthia and their son Julian, following John and Cynthia's divorce. McCartney wrote the song partly out of concern for the effect the separation would have on young Julian - the song was originally titled "Hey Jules" though later changed to "Hey Jude"

Handwritten and Signed Fair Copy Lyrics to "Mr. Tambourine Man"

A handwritten sheet of fair copy lyrics by Bob Dylan to his 1965 single "Mr. Tambourine Man," titled and signed "Bob Dylan 2009." The lyrics are written on The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park, stationery.

Accompanied by a typed, signed letter of authenticity from Jeff Rosen, president of Bob Dylan Music Company on company letterhead, stating that he has represented Dylan for the last 35 years and that the lyrics to "Mr. Tambourine Man" are original Dylan manuscripts, written in Dylan's own hand. To Rosen's knowledge, only five of these manuscripts are known to exist.

"Mr. Tambourine Man," written in 1964, did not appear on a Dylan album until it was released as the first track of the acoustic side of his March 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home. The song has been praised for its poetic lyrics and dreamlike quality, as well as its impact on the folk-rock genre.

Finally, Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) rolled out the red carpet for their "Hollywood Legends" auction slate, with an extraordinary dimension added by "The David Lynch Collection." This exclusive live and online event, set to ignite the "Hollywood Legends" marathon on June 18th, offered an intimate invitation into the creative psyche of a living legend. Comprising over 450 items directly from Lynch’s home, the collection provides a rare, unfiltered look at the personal artifacts and film-related pieces that have shaped his iconic work.

Among the standout pieces are David Lynch’s director’s chair, his personally owned Black Lodge style red curtain and black and white zig-zag rug, and his personal 35mm print of his groundbreaking debut feature film, Eraserhead.
