Living Legends: John Travolta
From Disco King to Aviator: A 72nd birthday tribute to John Travolta through Hollywood’s most iconic artifacts.

John Travolta: Screen-Matched And Photo-Matched "Saturday Night Fever" Suit
John Travolta recently marked his 72nd birthday by adding yet another pilot’s license to his credentials, proving that the man who once dominated the dance floor is just as comfortable at 30,000 feet. Sure, the pilot life is pretty sweet – and while the world knows him as a Hollywood heavyweight, we at Julien’s Auctions have had the privilege of handling the physical history of his legendary career.
To celebrate this milestone, we’re taking a deep dive into the most iconic artifacts from Travolta’s filmography – pieces that have transitioned from the silver screen to record-breaking auction highlights.
The Floor That Defined an Era: ‘Saturday Night Fever’
In 2024, the centerpiece of disco history – the original illuminating dance floor from Saturday Night Fever – sold for a staggering $325,000. Custom-made for the 2001 Odyssey Disco in Brooklyn for $15,000 in 1977, this 24-foot-long stage featured 288 bulbs governed by a NESS CL-2400 Light Control Center.
Travolta famously insisted on wide camera angles during filming to prove he didn't use a body double. This floor wasn't just a prop; it was the canvas for Tony Manero’s "purity and single-minded devotion" to the dance.
Included with the dance floor were the original acrylic panels used during the production of Saturday Night Fever, as well as modern acrylic panels that were created for the production the episode of Glee. With that kind of provenance, we’re confident its newest owner may be dancing the ole Funky Chicken.
Behind the Seams
Nothing captures the 1970s zeitgeist quite like the three-piece white suit worn by Travolta in his Academy Award-nominated role. Sold in 2023 for $260,000, this 100% polyester "ivory" suit (manufactured by Leading Male) is one of only two known to exist from the production.
Costume designer Patrizia Von Brandenstein chose white to evoke the image of a knight in a great contest – and while Travolta wore two suits in rotation to account for heavy perspiration during dance sequences, a third suit – the "Siskel Suit" – was famously owned by critic Gene Siskel but never worn on screen.
Before the white suit, there was the black leather Saxony jacket. Worn during the iconic opening sequence of Saturday Night Fever as Tony Manero struts down 86th Street to "Stayin' Alive," this piece sold for $35,200 in 2022. Interestingly, the jacket used on screen actually belonged to cameraman Craig DiBona; the production preferred its "worn" look over the pristine options provided by wardrobe.

Transitioning to a Cult Classic: ‘Pulp Fiction’
Travolta’s 1994 "resurrection" as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction brought a new aesthetic to the auction block. His black Perry Ellis two-piece suit, worn during the tense opening sequence with Samuel L. Jackson, sold for $32,500 in 2023.
While costume designer Betsy Heimann originally envisioned a rumpled linen suit to match Vincent’s "messy" persona, the classic black polyester suit became the definitive look for modern cool. This imagery even inspired the street artist Banksy, whose "Pulp Fiction" screenprint (replacing the characters' guns with bananas) which fetched $10,625 at auction.

The ‘Grease’ Legacy
Travolta’s chemistry with the late Olivia Newton-John remains a cornerstone of pop culture. Artifacts from Grease continue to command high valuations. A one-sheet signed by the entire cast, including Travolta and Newton-John, sold for $64,000. Meanwhile, an Annotated Script: A fourth-draft script belonging to Olivia Newton-John, signed by both leads, sold for $35,200.
Whether navigating the clouds or the complex themes of identity and class on screen, John Travolta remains an enduring emblem of American cinema.

Did You Know?
John Travolta isn't the only red carpet A-lister who has seen real-life hours in the cockpit. Here are a few other celebrities who hold private pilot's licenses:
Harrison Ford: Perhaps the most famous celebrity pilot, Ford is known for piloting both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters (and occasionally assisting in search-and-rescue missions).
Tom Cruise: A licensed pilot since 1994, Cruise famously flies many of his own aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang.
Angelina Jolie: Inspired by her son Maddox’s interest in planes, Jolie earned her pilot’s license in 2004.
Morgan Freeman: Proving it’s never too late to fly, Freeman earned his private pilot’s license at the age of 65.
