No band meshes with the reexamination of American values and the creation of an alternative vision of community like the Grateful Dead. Formed in the acid rock heat leading up to the Summer of Love, the Dead embodied a blend of musical and philosophical influences that attracted a sprawling community of "practitioners" and fans. This April 22, 2026, the "Treasures From the Golden Road" auction brings that counterculture spirit to the auction block in California.

The venue for this event, The Box SF, provides a thematic synergy that mirrors the band’s own history. Housed in the former 1926 William Randolph Hearst printing plant, it contains one of the largest collections of antiquarian paper and advertising in the world. This archival atmosphere perfectly frames the "Workingman’s Dead" era of the band — celebrating the intersection of American craftsmanship, print culture, and San Francisco's creative soul.

Curation From Trusted Comrades

What distinguishes this collection is its provenance. These are not merely third-party acquisitions; they are intimate items from the Dead’s family and trusted “crew” with featured property from family, including Jerry Garcia’s daughter, Trixie, and his first wife, Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Adams Garcia.

Legendary roadies and equipment managers like Lawrence "Ram Rod" Shurtliff and "Big Steve" Parish are also well-represented in this exclusive auction.

These are the individuals who rode to the ends of the earth with the band, touching and witnessing the Grateful Dead's most genuine moments.

Relix From the Past

A nod to our official media partner, the auction features over 300 lots of stage-played and tour-battered gear. Among the premier offerings is Jerry Garcia’s 1939 Gibson Super 400N Archtop Guitar. This natural-finish instrument was used during recording sessions with David Grisman, including the 1993 album Not For Kids Only and Garcia’s final session for Been All Around This World before his passing in 1995.

On the electric side, the collection includes a 1975 Mesa Boogie Mark I Combo Amp. Part of Garcia’s live rig from 1975-1976, the amp eventually transitioned from the stage to Jerry’s living room, where Trixie Garcia recalls it being "always at the ready".

Engineering the 'Wall of Sound'

The technical innovation of the Dead is represented by artifacts from the legendary Wall of Sound.

‘Mustard’ and ‘Ketchup’

Custom-made yellow and red aluminum road cases by the Zero case company.

McIntosh 2300 Power Amplifier

The "Ketchup" case still contains an MC2300 amplifier (serial number IY622), which "Big Steve" Parish notes was used primarily for lower frequency sounds in the “Wall of Sound” setup.

Hard Truckers Speaker Cabinet

A slate of closed-back cabinets featuring plywood construction and 15-inch speaker configuration typical of the company formed by Steve Parish and Joe Winslow to support the band's massive sound requirements.

Inner Vision: Tools of the Trade

Beyond the instruments, the auction offers an intimate glimpse into Garcia’s multi-faceted creativity through his original artwork and rehearsal materials. Personal effects and creative ephemera feature a Small Black Pastel Sketchbook offering a rare look at Jerry's quiet moments.

Containing abstract drawings and a colorful house on stilts, the book confirms what his daughter Trixie often shared: "The house was full of sketchbooks and art supplies."

Artistic Sense

A collection of small black pastel sketchbooks and original an 1985 airbrush work of a "blurry face" showcase Garcia's versatility outside of music.

The Working Process

A c. 1990s blue three-ring binder, known as Jerry’s Working Songbook, contains lead sheets for staples like "Rubin and Cherisse" and "Mission in the Rain," many featuring the handwriting of bassist John Kahn.

Wits from the Road

A 1981 group of five telegrams from promoter Bill Graham to the band members showcases his characteristic humor, including a note to Phil Lesh claiming he was "infiltrating Japanese whaling fleet with Greenpeace t-shirts."

Legendary Recognition: Artifacts of a Cultural Icon

While the Grateful Dead built their legacy on the "Golden Road" of touring, the world outside the music industry spent decades finding ways to honor them.

From the rafters of Madison Square Garden to the dirt of Candlestick Park, the "Treasures From the Golden Road" auction features rare artifacts that prove the Dead weren't just a band — they were a permanent fixture of the American landscape.

The Seat of Power at ‘The Garden’

Few venues are as synonymous with the Grateful Dead as Madison Square Garden. Between 1979 and 1994, the band played the iconic NYC arena 52 times. The auction features a Personalized MSG Tie-Dye Director’s Chair, a vibrant blue, purple, and grey piece of furniture commemorating their first 40 performances. With "Jerry" emblazoned on the back, it stands as a physical symbol of his status as "New York royalty," ranking alongside legends like Billy Joel and Elton John.

For the ‘Workingman’

Before the sell-out stadium runs, there was Workingman’s Dead — the 1970 shift toward Americana that changed everything. Representing this pivotal era is Lawrence "Ram Rod" Shurtliff’s RIAA Platinum Sales Award. Ram Rod wasn’t just a roadie; he was the backbone of the crew, and this award officially credits him for his role in the album’s million-plus success.

It is a rare acknowledgment of the "equipment crew" who turned the gears behind the scenes. Because deep down, success is always about friends and family.

America’s Pastime: Baseball & Art

The auction also reveals Jerry Garcia the "person" rather than the "persona." Jerry’s love for the San Francisco Giants is memorialized in a Personalized Louisville Slugger Bat. In 1993, Jerry and members of the band famously performed a cappella National Anthem at Candlestick Park — a moment of San Francisco synergy captured in this custom-engraved "Jerry Garcia Model" bat.

Garcia, Bob Weir, and “Big Steve” Parish were each gifted a Personalized Louisville Slugger Bat. And they’re all up for bid.

The Ultimate Cross-Cultural Gift

Perhaps the most surprising lot is a pair of Michael Jordan Signed 1997 Air Jordan 12s (Cherry). Gifted to Ram Rod in the late 90s, these sneakers represent a collision of two 20th-century titans: the GOAT of the hardwood and the GOAT of the equipment crew. It’s a testament to the high-level circles the Dead family moved in, bridging the gap between rock and roll and sports history.

A Historical Backdrop

From a 23k gold "Steal Your Face" necklace owned by Ram Rod to the very dressing room plaque gifted from the Winterland Ballroom after its 1979 closing, these items represent 30 years and over 2,300 live performances. They are the physical remains of a unique American journey.

"Treasures From the Golden Road" is a preserved history of a community that redefined American culture. By bringing together the best and rarest artifacts from band members, their families, and trusted roadies and managers, this auction offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of the Dead's most genuine moments.

Meet us at The Box SF when these ultra-rare treasures will find new homes, ensuring that the sprawling, counterculture spirit of the Grateful Dead continues to roll on.
