After studying at Brown University and working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, Talley landed his first major fashion job at Interview magazine, under the tutelage of Andy Warhol.

From there, Talley's career skyrocketed. He worked at Women's Wear Daily, W magazine, and The New York Times before finally landing his dream job at Vogue in 1983. Over the next four decades, Talley rose through the ranks to become the magazine's Creative Director and then Editor-at-Large.
