The entertainment world is in mourning as we bid farewell to a true icon: Chuck Norris. The martial arts master, and actor, was 86. As an all-around pop culture phenomenon, Norris left behind a legacy that is as powerful and enduring as one of his signature roundhouse kicks.
“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the family said in a statement. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” the family said. “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”
While the internet may have turned him into an infinite source of memes, the reality of Chuck Norris' career is even more impressive, marked by genuine martial arts prowess, a string of box office hits, and a charisma that made him one of Hollywood's most recognizable and beloved figures.
For over four decades, Chuck Norris dominated the action movie landscape. From his early breakout roles to his iconic turn as Cordell Walker in "Walker, Texas Ranger," he consistently delivered thrilling performances that resonated with audiences worldwide. His dedication to martial arts, which began during his time in the U.S. Air Force, was evident in every fight scene, lending an authenticity and power to his screen presence that was unmatched.
Julien's Auctions has had the privilege of offering several pieces that bear witness to Norris's enduring appeal. In our 2021 "Icons & Idols: Hollywood" auction, we saw incredible results for artwork related to some of his most memorable films.
The "Missing in Action" Chuck Norris Signed Stan Watts Original Film Poster Artwork, for instance, achieved a sold price of $19,200. This piece is particularly special because it's the original airbrush on illustration board artwork by Stan Watts, and it's signed in black ink by the Norris himself in the lower right, and by Watts in the lower left. The story behind the signature adds to its allure – Watts personally met with Norris at the Cannon Films offices in Hollywood to have him sign it. The artwork itself perfectly captures the film's intense action, with Norris, heavily armed in Vietnam, in the foreground, and a helicopter escape and explosion in the background. Despite the mixed critical reception "Missing in Action" received, it remains one of Norris' most popular films, and this artwork is a testament to its lasting impact.

Another notable lot from the same auction was the "Invasion U.S.A." Stan Watts Original Film Poster Artwork. The striking artwork, also an original airbrush on illustration board by Watts, is signed by Watts in the lower right, features Norris brandishing two rifles in the foreground, set against a chaotic backdrop of tanks and U.S. Army soldiers engaging in battle in front of the United States Capitol. It's a powerful and dynamic image that perfectly encapsulates the film's high-stakes action and Norris' undeniable presence.
And we can't forget the "Missing in Action 2: The Beginning" Stan Watts Original Film Poster Artwork, which sold for $4,480. This piece, also by Watts and signed in the center right, depicts Norris and his fellow POWs escaping a Vietnamese prison camp. The backstory of this film is fascinating – it was shot before "Missing in Action," as Cannon Films originally intended for it to be the first in the series. However, after viewing both films, Cannon heads Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus felt that "Missing in Action" was the stronger, more commercial film and chose to release it first. This resulted in "Missing in Action 2" being released as a prequel four months later. The artwork for this film is a beautiful and evocative reminder of Norris' versatility and his ability to bring depth to even the most action-packed roles.
There is a clear indication of a deep and lasting affection that fans and collectors have for Chuck Norris. He was more than just an actor; he was a symbol of strength, determination, and unyielding spirit – and provided the world the countless hours of thrill and excitement. His impact on popular culture is undeniable, and his legacy will continue to inspire and entertain generations to come.
