A romantic ballerina-length evening dress designed by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury for Diana Princess of Wales who wore it for at least two formal public appearances. Princess Diana first wore this dress to a dinner held by the Mayor of Florence, Italy when she was on an official royal tour of Italy with then Prince Charles in April of 1985. Diana was next photographed wearing this dress as she attended a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Canada in May of 1986. Princess Diana and Prince Charles were on a royal visit to Vancouver to formally open the Expo '86 World's Fair. The dress features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The dress has padded shoulder pads, typical for the decade, that go into long sleeves that taper at the wrist. The ballerina skirt is the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her patronage of the English National Ballet. The design is sweet and sophisticated, and the silver metallic paint on the velvet sparkles nicely alongside the embroidery to create a design reminiscent of a night's sky. While the skirt adds a playful element, the sleek bodice works well as the backdrop for the surface embroidery. A Jacques Azagury label is present, marked size 10, Made In England. Diana was introduced to Jacques Azagury's designs when she accompanied Anna Harvey, then British Vogue fashion editor, to the London Design Trade Show, which featured up-and-coming designers. Azagury was in awe meeting the princess, who came to his store in Knightsbridge three weeks later to purchase the dress she saw on display at the show. Diana would wear numerous dresses and gowns by Azagury, one of her favorites was an ice blue silk georgette mini-dress worn June 3, 1997, to the Royal Albert Hall for a performance of Swan Lake. This dress was previously on display at Kensington Palace in London, as part of the Fashion Rules exhibit that featured dresses worn by Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and Princess Diana that ran from July 4, 2013 - July 10, 2015 100% of the proceeds for the sale of this dress benefit The New-York Historical Society.
