What’s the Look of a Rocker?

Legendary musicians and their signature styles

May 2, 2024

When it comes to the visual identity of rock and roll, there are few bands as instantly recognizable and influential as AC/DC. Their no-frills, high-voltage aesthetic is a testament to the power of simplicity and a timeless embodiment of the genre's rebellious spirit.

At the heart of AC/DC's visual impact lies Angus Young, the band's lead guitarist. His schoolboy uniform–complete with a cap, blazer, shorts, satchel, and tie– is one of the most iconic looks in rock history. The uniform is a brilliant contradiction: the youthful innocence of a student juxtaposed with the unbridled energy and mature themes often present in their music. It's a visual representation of AC/DC's sound–accessible, catchy, yet fueled by an undeniable, power that was surely rough-around-the-edges.

AC/DC's style speaks to rock and roll's core values: rebellion, authenticity, and unpretentious swagger. They embodied an anti-fashion fashion statement, rejecting the elaborate stage costumes and theatrics favored by some of their contemporaries. Instead, they let their music do the talking, and played up their signature look as an extension of their straightforward, blues-infused brand of hard rock.

AC/DC's rock and roll look stood out from other bands, and their presentation did more than help shape the styles of their contemporaries.

The Grateful Dead: Polar opposites to AC/DC in sound, but shared a DIY spirit and visual connection to a unique fan base. Their tie-dye shirts and psychedelic iconography signaled a different tribe but one equally devoted to an authentic expression of music and counterculture.

The Sex Pistols: Defined punk with tattered clothes, safety pins, and confrontational style. AC/DC, while not punk, channeled a similar working-class energy and unvarnished attitude.

Motley Crue: Motley Crue's look is synonymous with the glam metal scene of the 1980s. It's a far cry from AC/DC's blue-collar simplicity, embracing a flamboyant and rebellious spirit unique to the Sunset Strip. Tight leather pants and jackets were staples, reflecting the band's edgy, bad-boy image. Bandanas, ripped jeans, and studs added a touch of punk rock rebellion. But Motley Crue wasn't afraid of a touch of glamour either. Lace, metallic fabrics, and even eyeliner on the guys blurred the lines between masculine and feminine, creating a flamboyant and provocative look that pushed boundaries.

Van Halen: Van Halen's visual style struck a balance between rock and roll swagger and a touch of Hollywood glam. The band’s overall aesthetic leaned towards a California-casual vibe with a rock and roll twist. This resonated with their image as a group of talented musicians having fun – a stark contrast to the sometimes darker and more aggressive visuals of other hard rock bands.

Queen: While more extravagant and operatic, Queen, like AC/DC, forged a unique look instantly associated with their sound. Freddie Mercury's flamboyant stage persona mirrored the band's mix of hard rock energy and soaring melodies.

The legacy of these bands – and property of others we have yet to reveal – illustrates how rock and roll fashion and stylistic tastes became about more than clothing. It was visual shorthand for attitude, rebellion, community, and self-expression, allowing fans to align themselves with the music and culture that resonated with them.
