Frankenstein's Special Effects,
King Kong Dinosaur In Los Angeles Auction

A famous 1930's special effects device known as "Megavolt Sr." that was used in "Frankenstein" films to create a million volts of lightning-like bolts will be offered in a "Monsters & Magic" auction, November 15.

Many other classic special effects equipment plus props, posters and paraphernalia from sci-fi and horror genre favorites are included in the public sale to be conducted in Los Angeles and on eBay by Julien Entertainment of Hollywood (www.JulienEntertainment.com) in association with Odyssey Auctions (www.autographs.com) of Corona, California.

 

Dracula poster"The 'Megavolt Sr.' was created by renowned Hollywood special effects genius Kenneth Strickfaden, and was his favorite special effects device. It was used in several 'Frankenstein' films and later in Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1984 movie, 'The Terminator,' and it is valued at $65,000 or more, " said Darren Julien, President of Julien Entertainment.

In addition to "Frankenstein," Strickfaden created props for "Flash Gordon" and "The Wizard of Oz." The auction also features legendary items from ardent sci-fi fan, Forrest J. Ackerman, editor of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine.

Another auction highlight is Ackerman's private archive of more than 10,000 stills from science fiction, fantasy and horror films dating back to the 1903 movie, "A Trip To The Moon," and continuing through the first "Star Wars" films.

Cyclops photo Among the other major attractions in the sale is a metal and wood model of a dinosaur for the 1933 classic, King Kong. The brontosaurus model was used in the scene where several men are attacked while on a raft. It is expected to sell for $50,000 or more.

A special effects concave mirror, called a Nebularium, which created dramatic laboratory shadows in the 1931 film, "Frankenstein," and used in other sci-fi films, could sell for $100,000 or more, according to Julien.

Other highlights include a signed 1931 contract for actor Boris Karloff to portray Frankenstein's monster; actor Brandon Lee's main costume from the cult classic 1994 movie, "The Crow;" a phaser rifle used in the 1996 film, "Star Trek: First Contact;" and actor Patrick Stewart's Captain Picard costume worn in the 2002 film, "Star Trek: Nemesis.

Magician Harry Blackstone's famous sawing-a-woman-in-half illusion, including the whirling 30-inch buzz saw blade, also will be offered in the "Monsters & Magic" auction,

 "More than 400 stage illusions and costumes from the estates of internationally-known father and son magicians, Harry Blackstone Senior and Junior, are in the sale, including their famous sawing-a-woman-in-half illusion with a whirling 30-inch buzz saw blade. The opening bid on the famous buzz saw magic trick will be $8,000.
