Landmark Auction Provided Very First Public View of a Collection of Marilyn Monroe Personal Items

Beverly Hills, California – (December 6, 2014) – After weeks of anticipation and throngs of media attention, the Lost Archives of Marilyn Monroe and a vast collection of Hollywood memorabilia were auctioned over the weekend at the Icons & Idols: Hollywood auction event held at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills. The extremely rare and important collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia was originally given to her mentor and coach Lee Strasberg who later gifted it to a friend, and featured love letters, photographs, personal items, personal records and documents and other memorabilia which were in the possession of Marilyn Monroe herself.

Highlights of the Lost Archives of Marilyn Monroe included a love letter written to Marilyn by Joe DiMaggio after learning of his impending divorce which sold for $78,125, the Marilyn Monroe silk overcoat which she often wore and was photographed in sold for $175,000, the Marilyn Monroe letter written to Arthur Miller sold for $43,750, the Marilyn Monroe black cocktail dress and opera coat sold for $93,750, a Marilyn Monroe owned pendant sold for $34,375, the Earl Moran signed nude painting of Marilyn Monroe sold for $37,500, the legendary film icon’s black beaded necklace sold for $37,500, the Marilyn Monroe owned compact sold for $46,875, Marilyn Monroe’s brassiere sold for $20,000, the icon’s lip brush sold for $10,000, and her rhinestone star hair combs sold for $22,500.

Other highlights of the Icons & Idols: Hollywood auction included dresses offered from the Collection of HRH Princess Diana.  The Caroline Charles designed wool coat dress worn by Princess Diana while visiting the Milan Asian Community Playgroup in Wadsworth, London in 1982 and in 1983 at Aberdeen Airport carrying Prince William sold for $125,000, a Zandra Rhodes Evening Gown sold for $100,000, and the piece of wedding cake from the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton sold to Gee Chuang, co-founder and CEO of Listia.com for $7,500.

Film highlights included the James Bond 007 “You Only Live Twice” film used chair which sold for $16,250 and the “You Only Live Twice” helicopter film prop which sold for $22,500.  Loni Anderson’s nude portrait commission by an artist by her former husband Burt Reynolds sold for $4,480 and her wedding dress worn when she married Burt Reynolds sold for $7,680. Bruce Lee’s leather jacket sold for $70,400, Farrah Fawcett’s bronze nude sculpture sold for $15,000 as did the Andy Warhol inscribed napkin that the artist created for Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal which also sold for $15,000.

Most items offered in the mega-auction sale went for way beyond the original estimates including Charlie Chaplin’s international license ($3,200), Loni Anderson’s Western boots ($2,880), Yul Brynner’s “Magnificent Seven” hat ($4,800), Cary Grant’s jackets  ($4,160) and a Star Wars original illustration by Colin Cantwell ($11,875) among many other extraordinary and historical items offered over the two day session that saw bidders from every point of the globe bidding on-site, online and by the phone.
