2013 Icons and Idols: Rock 'n Roll Auction

Icons and Idols Rock logo

Join Julien’s as we celebrate the history of Rock 'n Roll on December 6th and 7th, 2013 with a remarkable auction at Julien’s Beverly Hills Gallery. This auction contains memorabilia from the personal and professional careers of a wide spectrum of artists including: a storied Paul McCartney presentation guitar, Jerry Garcia’s Travis Bean TB500 electric guitar, an archive of music art with its roots in 1960s American psychedelia, personal property from Axl Rose belonging to his former wife, handwritten lyrics, property from the Estate of Ronnie Montrose, personal guitars, drums and other instruments from some of the world’s greatest musicians, stage worn clothing, a double neck bass used in the film Spinal Tap, Lady Gaga’s latex dress, Elvis Presley’s blue suede shoes, and Michael Jackson’s jacket worn on the cover of LIFE magazine.

The legendary Jimi Hendrix’s own stage-worn embroidered vest will be sold at the Icons & Idols: Rock 'n Roll event. Other Hendrix related highlights include a Jimi Hendrix Experience signed cut sheet, Hendrix photographs taken by Ed Thrasher and Jimi Hendrix’s handwritten working lyrics for the song “Local Commotion,” said to have appeared on the unreleased “Black Gold” suite. Other lyrics being offered include Bob Dylan’s handwritten “Tambourine Man” lyrics, Jim Morrison’s handwritten lyrics for “L’America,” George Harrison’s handwritten lyrics for “Isn’t It A Pity,” and other handwritten lyrics from Bon Scott, LL Cool J, Bruce Springsteen and annotated lyrics from Stevie Nicks.

Rock 'n Roll is defined by the instruments used on stage and in the studio. There is a remarkable list of instruments being offered this December at Julien’s Auctions. Topping the list is Jerry Garcia’s personal Travis Bean TB500 electric guitar that will be sold on December 6. This was a pioneering guitar, the first with Garcia’s own Onboard Effects Loop. This guitar is noted by Steve Parrish, Garcia’s guitar tech, as being the third most played Garcia guitar, behind “Wolf” and “Tiger.”

The Estate of guitarist, composer and producer Ronnie Montrose will be represented with a collection of equipment and his personally named guitars “The Beast,” “Trigger,” “Skinny” and “Montrose.” Other equipment highlights include a Roland G-707 Synthesizer Guitar owned by Jimmy Page, a Kramer Ferrington guitar owned by Mick Jagger and later gifted to his brother Chris Jagger, a 1956 Fender Telecaster and a 1973 Martin D-18 acoustic guitar owned by Creedence Clearwater’s Tom Fogerty, a 1954 Fender Telecaster played and signed by Keith Richards, a 1956 Guild Thunderbird electric guitar used by John Doe on his solo projects, a Jimmy Vaughan stage played Fender Stratocaster and two guitars from the Cash musical empire — a pair of acoustic guitars owned by Johnny Cash and one by his wife June Carter Cash.

Lovers of music and art will be interested in the archival collection of items from artists known for their connection to the 1960s San Francisco music scene — Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Dennis Larkins, and Gary Grimshaw whose careers extend out of the 60s and come into their own in the amazing collection of artwork including many lots produced for the Grateful Dead, sketchbooks, logo lettering, paintings including Stanley Mouse’s Grateful Dead Jester painting used on the cover of The Grateful Dead Songbook in 1973, concept drawings; logo lettering; T-shirt, publicity, and poster designs for the Grateful Dead, among others; and finished artwork. The archive also includes the largest collection of uncut posters and plates from Chet Helms' Family Dog Productions and other happenings in the San Francisco area. This collection is years in the making and offered together here for the last time.

With over 750 lots from collectors all over the world, this sale is going to be one for the record books. The auction begins at 2:00 p.m. P.S.T. on December 6th, 2013.
